A starting palette of water-wise plants that do well in inland Riverside County. Dots show relative water need. Your landscaper will fit the list to your yard's sun and soil.

Start with the order of work

Landscaping goes in last. If you're adding a patio cover, pavers, or turf, do those first so heavy equipment and concrete trucks don't tear up new plants and irrigation. Your landscaper can rough in irrigation sleeves under hardscape before it's poured, which saves cutting it later.

Drip irrigation

Drip lines put water at the roots, waste far less than spray heads, and keep water off your walls and walkways. A smart controller that adjusts for weather saves more. Group plants by water need so thirsty plants and dry-loving plants aren't on the same valve.

Planters along the block wall

A planting strip along the rear and side walls softens the block, adds privacy, and gives you room for shrubs and small trees. Keep soil and mulch below the top of the wall footing and well clear of the house's weep screed.

Trees on small lots

New Winchester lots are compact, so tree choice matters. Some species have roots that lift slabs and walls. Ask for trees suited to small yards, plant them a safe distance from hardscape, and stake them until they establish.

Common questions

When is the best time to plant in Winchester?

Fall is usually best, followed by early spring. Plants establish roots before summer heat. Irrigation and hardscape can go in any time.

How much water will a new landscape use?

It depends on plant choice and irrigation. A drip system with water-wise plants grouped by need uses far less than lawn and spray heads.

Can one landscaper also do turf and pavers?

Many can. Mention every project when you request quotes so we match you with the right contractor.

Is this service free?

Yes. You never pay us. The landscapers we work with cover the cost of the referral.
