A worked example
A planter strip along a 60 ft back wall, 4 ft deep, is 240 sq ft. At $4.50 to $12 per sq ft that's about $1,080 to $2,880 planted. If the quote doesn't include irrigation, drip for that strip adds roughly $410 to $1,150 at the published range.
What moves the price
Plant size. A tree can cost $120 or $2,500 planted, mostly depending on its size at purchase. Smaller plants cost less and often establish faster in the heat.
Irrigation zones. Grouping plants by water need is the right call, and each added zone runs $300 to $1,100. Most new-home backyards need a few.
Walls and structures. Planting and drip usually don't need a permit, but walls and some electrical work do, through Riverside County.
Water rules worth knowing
Winchester is in Eastern Municipal Water District's service area. EMWD's turf replacement rebate pays to swap living grass for climate-appropriate planting and needs approval before work starts, so it matters if you're redoing an existing lawn, not a new dirt yard.
California Civil Code section 4735 also bars HOAs from prohibiting low water-using plants, though they can still apply landscaping rules that don't amount to a ban. Our planning and approvals guide covers the submittal.
Common questions
How much does it cost to landscape a backyard in Winchester?
HomeAdvisor's 2026 national range is $4.50 to $12 per sq ft installed. The total depends on how much of the yard you plant versus pave or turf.
How much does drip irrigation cost?
LawnStarter's 2026 range is $1.70 to $4.80 per sq ft installed, with each added zone costing $300 to $1,100.
Can my HOA require lawn instead of drought-tolerant plants?
No. California Civil Code section 4735 voids HOA rules that prohibit low water-using plants. The HOA can still review your plan and apply rules that don't amount to a ban.
